Away from one another but together in celebrations – Happy UN Day

24 October 2021

UNITED NATIONS

The iconic United Nations logo epitomizes the aspirations for global unity, peace and prosperity.

In 1945, during the United Nations Conference on International Organization, a team of designers headed by Oliver Lincoln Lundquist, created the logo. The logo was officially approved on 7 December 1946.

United Nations Logo

The design consists of a map of the world inscribed in a wreath made up of branches of olive tree, representing peace. The map is projected to extend to 60 degrees south latitude, and contains five concentric circles. The map represents the countries of the world. The entire logo, therefore, symbolizes peace among nations. The emblem is often blue, although it is printed in white on a blue background on the UN flag.

This logo has also been incorporated with several other logos of the UN Family members.

The term ‘United Nations’ was first put forward by the 32nd president of the United States of America, Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 1, 1942 during the Second World War when the representatives of 26 nations joined in to continue fighting against the Axis power together. In 1945, representatives of 50 countries got together in San Francisco at the United Nations conference on the International Organization to compile the United Nations Charter and it officially came into existence on 24 October 1945. The United Nations declared October 24 as United Nations Day in 1947. Since then, it has been celebrated on 24 October globally. It is currently an organization made up of 193 countries. The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the UN. Its main theme is the pursuit of peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations by promoting development and human dignity. It is in this same spirit, we must “reimagine” a WORLD that is “rebalanced” for present and future generations for emerging stronger and better equipped to work together.

The United Nations was formed with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. It also takes action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, humanitarian and health emergencies, food production, and more. The UN is the only truly global organization in history.

The United Nations observes designated days, weeks, years, and decades, each with a theme. By creating special observances, the United Nations promotes international awareness and action on these issues.
